Last week I opened my deep bathroom closet to a major mess that was accumulating for months. I keep haircare and styling products, pain relievers, first aid, skincare, and dental products all in one very deep closet. Bottles and spray cans were strewn all over the shelves, bins were placed on top of other bins, and it was impossible to find anything. It was time to do a major overhaul and straighten out and organize the entire closet, with the following steps:
- All Emergency-Related Medications and Products were placed on the 2nd shelf, which is easiest to reach:
- Pain Reliever Expiration Dates were checked: The first thing I did was to go through the bin containing all of the aspirins and pain relievers to check for expiration dates. All expired bottles were discarded. Then, I reorganized all of the bottles inside the bin, placing the aspirin bottle CLEARLY FRONT and CENTER of the bin, with Tylenol and other pain relievers alongside and behind. The bin is open so that the bottle covers are clearly visible and is in the center of the shelf.
- Decongestants and liquid cold and flu medications were placed in 2 separate bins to the left of the pain relievers.
- First aid products and bandages were placed in a separate bin to the right of the pain relievers.
It is important to keep all of the above medical supplies together in one area.
- The 1st shelf contains rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide products in 2 separate bins, and muscle rubs and pain relief patches in another. These are also easy to reach, in case they are needed in an emergency.
- The 3rd shelf is somewhat higher and contains hair care and styling products in one bin, hair brushes in another one, and skincare and powder items in a 3rd Since I use them frequently, they are at the front of the shelf.
As the shelves are several feet deep, I have a separate bin with dental items; i.e. toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss behind the beauty care items. Because of the way the closet is now organized by bin, it is very easy to simply pull out a bin and get the items I need.
- The top shelf is much wider than the rest, and is used for larger items such as a vaporizer, heating pad, and soaps. At the very bottom of the closet is also a huge space where I store bathroom paper goods.
Now that this closet is totally reorganized, I can find whatever I need very quickly, which is extremely important if an emergency arises.
